The ground elder is invasive and hated - but surprisingly tasty!
This attractive plant with bright, upright green foliage and white flowers is a pest for #gardeners.

Like bindweed, ground elder is a persistent weed, it will rapidly reproduce and create a carpet of plants from rhizomes, which can grow up to 90 cm per year! To eradicate it, the soil should be repeatedly dug over and the rhizomes removed and burnt.
Alternatively you could always eat it! The tender, new leaves can be eaten as a spring leaf vegetable, much like spinach.

For this week’s #fridaytip we’re discussing #soil health & #mulches. Keep the soil around fruit trees and bushes in good condition, especially in hot dry spells this month.

Mulch well, but always onto wet soil. Leave a gap around the stem or trunk to allow air flow. Grass mowings, #leafmould, rough #compost and similar materials are all suitable mulches.

If you have small trained fruit trees - apples and pears which are espaliered or cordoned – now is a good time to prune them back into shape.

We updated you last week on our member's experiments and now we'd like to know if you have harvested any of your plants?

We're just about ready to harvest our #tomatillos and plan on making a tasty roasted tomatillo salsa! Here's what you'll need...

Ingredients:
1lb of tomatillos, cleaned, with papery cases removed
2 cloves of garlic roughly chopped
1 small onion roughly chopped
Juice of half a lemon
2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 green chilli (optional), sliced
2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves

Method:
Preheat oven to 200c. Place tomatillos, garlic, onion, chilli on a baking tray, and pour over 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Roast for around 7 minutes, or until the skins of the tomatillos are just starting to char. Blend all the remaining ingredients, except the olive oil using a blender so that it still retains a rough texture. The olive oil should be drizzled in last, with the blender still running.

The salsa will have tangy taste and makes a great addition to mexican food. It will keep up to a week in the fridge.

Very unusual pods developing on our edible chickling vetch (Lathyrus sativus). It makes small lentil-like seeds that are eaten in many countries around the Mediterranean. We always have a few experimental things on the go, and this one certainly grows well here. We'll have to wait and see how easy it is to gather the seeds before they scatter though! ... See more

"Czech Early" aubergine living up to its name! Just about ready by the end of June - not at all bad for an unheated polytunnel in Wales.

Here's experimental tomato 'Blue Fire' under trial in one of the polytunnels. It is very pretty - but not yet ripe enough to taste-test.

Thought people might like to see the nodules on the roots of a broad bean plant. In all 'leguminous' plants - peas, beans etc - this is where the beneficial bacteria live that fix nitrogen from the air for the plant to use, so the plant can grow in poorer soil. The plant in return provides a safe home and sugar for the bacteria to live off. It also supplies oxygen to the bacteria - if you cut a nodule open, it is pink inside. The colour is from the plants 'leghaemoglobin' - just like the haemoglobin in your blood! ... See more
