For this week’s #fridaytip we're sharing our know how on green manures! Now is the perfect time to sow green manures, especially if you have bare soil after harvesting.

These are plants which will improve your soil, such as vetch and clover. Their roots fix nitrogen from the air. Be sure to dig them in after flowering and before seed sets.

If you've got some spare time this #weekend why not take the opportunity to sow your green manures!

Our volunteers have #harvested a bumper collection of colourful #vegetables today, all from our very own Allotment Garden.

A little tip for the weekend ahead, however the weather is set to brighten up! 😀

Due to the rainfall yesterday there is some soft ground underfoot today; please do wear appropriate footwear. The weather is looking nice going into the weekend!

This week's #weedywednesday comes courtesy of the Fat Hen!

Originally grown as a #vegetable, and now considered a #weed, the Fat Hen offers many benefits.

Fat Hen was eaten as a vegetable from Neolithic times until the 16th century when it was replaced by #spinach and #cabbage.

Rich in #vitamin C, it is still grown and eaten in North #India.
The seeds can be ground into flour, and it was grown as food for pigs, sheep - and hens! The leaves are a source of #ascaridole, an oil used to treat infestations of round worms and hook worms.

Very unusual pods developing on our edible chickling vetch (Lathyrus sativus). It makes small lentil-like seeds that are eaten in many countries around the Mediterranean. We always have a few experimental things on the go, and this one certainly grows well here. We'll have to wait and see how easy it is to gather the seeds before they scatter though! ... See more

"Czech Early" aubergine living up to its name! Just about ready by the end of June - not at all bad for an unheated polytunnel in Wales.

Here's experimental tomato 'Blue Fire' under trial in one of the polytunnels. It is very pretty - but not yet ripe enough to taste-test.

Thought people might like to see the nodules on the roots of a broad bean plant. In all 'leguminous' plants - peas, beans etc - this is where the beneficial bacteria live that fix nitrogen from the air for the plant to use, so the plant can grow in poorer soil. The plant in return provides a safe home and sugar for the bacteria to live off. It also supplies oxygen to the bacteria - if you cut a nodule open, it is pink inside. The colour is from the plants 'leghaemoglobin' - just like the haemoglobin in your blood! ... See more
