We spent the day up in the northeast, experiencing other CSA's and organic farming practices. We had a walk around Nafferton farm, showing us their research on organic methods vs conventional methods. We finished the day with a presentation documenting the evidence that organic foods were higher in antioxidants and omega fatty acids, while been much lower in carcinogens like cadmium. Our top #fridaytip for the week is to clear away rotting or diseased leaves from the veg patch, especially from #lettuces and #brassicas. Much of it can be #composted.

As you lift your #veg, cover any bare areas of soil with a low nutrient mulch such as leaf mould, straw or dampened down newly-fallen leaves.

We have two types of #Plantain for our #WeedyWednesday plant this week - Greater Plantain Plantago major & Ribwort Plantain Plantago lanceolata.

Both are found in #lawns and paths, and both are #perennial weeds with strong roots. But did you know they are also a useful herb?

Greater Plantain: #Herbalists use the leaves to stem bleeding in small wounds, as well as to soothe insect bites and stings.

Ribwort Plantain: A #tea or #syrup from the leaves is used as a cough medicine. A poultice may also relieve stings and skin irritations.

It's that exciting time of year when seed starts ripening thick and fast 🙂 Below are the first few umbels of Manchester Table carrot seed ready to harvest in the tunnel.

We've just harvested the tree onions - they're drying nicely in the barn, and we've got a few of the earliest ones packed up now.

We found lots of little baby lizards while we were clearing up in front of the tunnel - they move very fast, but one stayed still long enough for a photo.

Some of the flowers we've got growing amongst the vegetables on our fields at the moment - great for the bees, and some of them are edible too.

Everything is growing so fast right now. The edible lupin 'dieta' has set loads of pods. The seeds of this special variety are hopefully non-bitter and are cooked or pickled as 'altramuz'; a high yielding, fast-growing, nitrogen-fixing food crop. ... See more
